Essential Natural Hair Care Products!

Carrier oils, also known as base oils or vegetable oils, are used for lengthy and healthy hair growth and maintenance and additionally can be used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the hair.

Carrier Oils bare this name as they carry the essential oil onto the hair and skin. They do not usually contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils such as Tea Tree and Rose Mary Oil, however some carrier oils such as Olive Oil have a mild distinctive smell.

The carrier oils used in the hair should be as natural and unadulterated as possible. It is debatable that organic oils are of higher quality. Carrier Oils are typically cold-pressed.

Carrier oils can be easily blended to combine their properties of viscosity, acceptability, lubrication, absorption, aroma and so forth.

All carrier oils should be kept cool and away from strong light, to prevent contamination. Contaminated and rancid oils should be avoided. Refrigerating oils helps preserve their freshness but some oils should not be refrigerated (e.g. avocado). Very cold oils may appear cloudy, but regain their clear state on returning to room temperature (e.g. Emu oil and Coconut Oil).

There are multiple different types of popular carrier oils, BUT this does not mean you need all of them, however it is very important to FIRST read through their properties so you know exactly what their benefits are. Consequently this will also help you identify the oils which will best benefit your hair, for example coarse hair may require heavier base oils as opposed to fine hair which would require a lighter base oil such as coconut oil. You’ll find, by reading through their properties, that each carrier oil has different properties which may benefit one person more than another for various reasons ranging from texture and aroma to preventing allergic reactions.

Below, are listed a number of popular carrier oils used for hair, they can either be used on their own or mixed and infused with essential oils to achieve a desired Hair Oil Mix. You can mix carrier oils with essential oils and massage the mixture into the scalp to stimulate blood flow to the scalp and encourage hair growth. I do this DAILY!

*When mixing oils:  It is advised you use 6 – 12 drops of essential oils per 1 ounce of carrier oil.

Popular Carrier Oils:

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Rich in vitamin E and other powerful antioxidants. Replaces moisture and elasticity. Great healing and preserving properties, helping to restore and retain hair’s health. Olive oil can be used as a natural conditioner, it makes your hair shiny and soft. Olive oil massages can improve the blood circulation in your scalp. This increased blood flow can stimulate the follicles, which then produce thicker strands.

Coconut Oil

An inexpensive light moderately greasy oil, absorbs into the hair easily. Rich in lauric acid, which is known for being antibacterial and anti-fungal. Good for conditioning damaged hair, combating dry scalp and has very long shelf life.

Jojoba Oil

A seemingly silky, light, moderately odourless  oil which easily absorbs in to the hair. An excellent remover of build up from the sticky modern hair products. Great hair and skin conditioner for most hair and skin types. Jojoba is the only oil whose molecular structure is similar to sebum (the oil that is naturally produced by the scalp), has very long shelf life and it is one of the most nutrient rich and expensive botanical oils. As a conditioner jojoba helps to add shine, elasticity and softness to hair. Jojoba also hydrates hair from the inside of the hair shaft. So it works well as an agent for reducing hygral fatigue (the swelling and shrinking of hair as it it gets wet and dries that can weaken the hair fibre over time). It is reputed to have antibacterial properties. It soothes the scalp and can be used to treat dry scalp problems and dandruff.

Argon Oil

A light, non-greasy oil, is also a good natural source of Vitamin E thus it is chosen by many experts to treat damaged hair. You can use argon oil to add shine to your hair and is able to restore the natural luster and beautiful shine of your hair. It is able to penetrate the pores of the hair follicles and shaft and thus is able to enhance the elasticity of the hair. With this penetration, it is also able to help in the nourishing of the hair. It is also rich in omega 3 and 9 fatty acids that will help in the healing of split ends.

Sweet Almond Oil

An inexpensive non-greasy, light oil that absorbs into the hair easily. Considered to be the ‘perfect’ all-purpose oil as it blends well with all oils especially Avocado Oil.

Avocado Oil

A moderately light oil, rich in protein and vitamin. Contains B Complex, vitamin A, E and D and potassium.

Grapeseed Oil

An inexpensive, light, odourless, vitamin rich oil. Adds sheen and moisture to hair. Contains Linoleic acid which is important for cell health. However it has the possibility of turning rancid quickly. If it is stored in a dark bottle in a cool dark area, you may not have any problems with rancidity. Blends well with Avocado Oil.

Castor Oil

An inexpensive thick, odourless oil. Caster oil is a humectant; humectants attract and retrain moisture into your hair. Has very long shelf life.

JBC Oil

Jamaican Black Castor Oil works for all hair types. It will moisturize, thicken, strengthen and rapidly increase hair growth. It increases blood flow to the scalp, supplying valuable nutrients to hair follicles. Jamaican Black Castor Oil will also prevent hair breakages, dandruff, eczema and dry, itchy scalp. This versatile oil carries many varied uses. JBCO will solve the following: Dry brittle hair, hair breakages, dandruff, dry itchy scalp, eczema, thinning hair, alopecia, bald spots, and will rapidly increase hair growth including eyebrows and eyelashes. Over the last ten years, it is an established precedent that Jamaican Black Castor oil is more effective than the clear pharmacy castor oil because of the ash content due to roasting of the beans.

Emu Oil

The oil is very light, non greasy and cloudy in colour. Studies have shown that emu oil, which is rich in linoleic acid, can promote healthy hair growth.  It promotes skin cell regeneration and awakens the follicles.  It is touted as a hair thickener and as a hair growth product.

Macadamia Nut Oil

An all-natural heat protectant!

Keep in mind that carrier oils used alone are an excellent way to prevent or slow hair loss and promote HEALTHY and LENGTHY hair growth. But if you add other ingredients to the carrier oils, such as infusing them with other carrier oils and essential oils such as tea tree oil and rosemary oil, you can see even better results.
